Juliet Rossi was a surprise. An accident, as her mother Anna told her, and she never let her forget it if she could help it. For a woman who had no interest in anyone but herself, a child was an inconvenience, something she would rather be rid of than take care of. Juliet doesn't remember a lot of her childhood, except for the times her grandmother came to visit. Valentina Rossi, as far as Juliet was concerned, was her saving grace. When she visited, Juliet was cared for. She had attention, she had love, and she felt like she mattered. It was Valentina who would take Juliet to the doctor when one of Anna's many boyfriends would abuse her, a habit that seemed prevalent in the men that Anna chose. So when, at seven years old, Juliet found herself dumped on her grandmother's doorstep in New York, she knew life was about to get better. Anna was never heard from again, but Juliet didn't mind, because she had her grandmother, who doted on her, and from there, life blossomed.
Juliet excelled in school, loved the challenge of schoolwork and working out problems. She wasn't the most social girl, but she had friends, and she had a good life. When Juliet was fifteen years old, Valentina's health began declining, and three months after Juliet's seventeenth birthday, her world shattered. Valentina Rossi, the only stability Juliet had known, passed away. With nobody to turn to, and the apartment they'd shared already being rented out to a new tenant, Juliet was forced to grow up, and fast. She landed a retail job at Bloomingdale's by some miracle, and after a week in a homeless shelter, a friend from school rented the spare room in her apartment to her. Four months later, the friend decided she'd rather have her boyfriend move in and kicked Juliet out on her ass unapologetically.
Determined not to go back to the homeless shelter, she began sleeping in an unused office at the TAALK building, an organization she volunteered for regularly. Three days into that, she discovered that office wasn't so unused after all, when Matt Lewis, owner of TAALK, came strolling in late one night. Unable to escape unnoticed, Jules was forced to admit her humiliating situation to her boss, who surprisingly, instead of having her arrested, showed amazing compassion. Insisting she stay in the spare room of his apartment, he took Jules under his wing and from there, her life has blossomed.
Able to quit her job at Bloomingdale's and get a job related to her true passion, photography, Juliet began teaching classes at TAALK and with Matt's help, piecing her life back together. It wasn't long into their friendship that things happened in both their lives to make them realize that maybe they needed (and wanted, much to Juliet's chagrin in the beginning) each other. He became a rock for her that held her up while she healed from the death of her grandmother, and she was there for him during a time in his life when nearly all others had abandoned him. The chemistry between them was electric, and before long, they couldn't keep their hands off each other. Carefully, they started down the road called 'relationship' together, both of them determined to make it work.
About six months after they made that decision, things in Matt's life got to be too much, and together they decided to move. Out of the city and away from the demons that were causing him so much pain. Deciding on New Haven, not only for its proximity to New York, but also for Yale, where Matt could finish out his degree, and for new opportunities for Jules to explore her photography. It was a fresh start for Matt, and for Jules, though she didn't realize how much good it would do her, it's been a breath of fresh air.
